A Few of My Favorite Things – September

How do you all manage your crazy seasons? I tend to manage my stress with exercise and with a glass of wine not at the same time.

My last few weeks have been incredibly busy with all the back-to-school activities, start of soccer season, music lessons and normal daily activities that still need to happen. Looking at my calendar, life is just going to be pretty crazy between now and the holidays (deep breath). Meanwhile, I’m sitting here at my computer struggling to write a couple of blog posts that are not coming together and realizing they just need a little more time.  So instead, here are a few things that make me happy.

Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy

I picked up this book by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant a few weeks ago and it’s been so good. I love the idea that resiliency is a muscle that we have to build and by forcing ourselves to use it we become stronger. Just reminding yourself of the things you do well can help you change your mindset. It’s amazing how many limitations we can put on ourselves and I’m challenged to expand my horizons.

Instant Pot

I’ve had this model for close to 7 years and it’s fantastic. I bought it when our rice cooker broke and I also wanted a slow cooker. I knew my husband would not be happy with me adding clutter to our kitchen where space is at a premium. This machine does everything and I use it pretty much every other day. I got it long before it became such a cult kitchen device but the press is well-deserved, in my opinion. The new models are even more full-functioned.

My children have activities nearly every day after school and the ability to have a healthy dinner prepared the minute I walk in the door is invaluable. I can still eat at a reasonable time and get everyone to bed before 10 PM.

Sous Vide Cooker

I love this for the same reason I love my Instant Pot. It allows me to have dinner cooking while I am at swimming lessons or soccer practice. Basically, this is water circulator that heats the water to a certain temperature and keeps it at that temperature. Because, you are essentially cooking at the lowest temperature possible to ensure doneness, you don’t ever have to worry about overcooking. It is by far the best way to cook fish or cheaper cuts of meat. Most restaurants use them.

I use it primarily for cooking proteins but you can use it for veggies too. I come home and sear the meat and we are ready to eat.

I have the Anova Sous Vide Cooker but there are a bunch of options out there. I would highly recommend getting one you can control from your smartphone though.

If you want, I can start adding some of my favorite Instant Pot of sous vide recipes here. Let me know in the comments.

Lululemon Wunder Under Tight

I have been very slow to adopt the patterned legging trend. I find them hard to pull off and have the pattern be flattering. I didn’t even pick these out, my husband did. They are SO comfortable and I feel so cool and hip in them. It doesn’t take much these days. 🙂 I’m also loving the higher waistband. It smoothes out the muffin top.

That’s it for today! I’d love to hear what’s making your day.
